Bird of Paradise Flower

Bird of Paradise Flower is a plant native to South Africa, called Strelitzia reginae, cultivated in tropical and semitropical gardens for their beauty of their flowers.

The first time I saw her was in Tenerife, where she has been adopted and become a tourist facility, in fact I brought 10 floors to give to the family ... an older woman who was selling flowers on a street was thrilled.

  The shrub

The shrub can become large, over 1 meter high and 1 meter wide.

If the plant has been pollinated, after drying the flower opens mostran some seeds the size of a pea with a kind of orange hair. If these are fresh seeds germination is very simple and we get to play this plant very easily.

It is a plant that needs a lot of light intensity is imprescibidble receive direct sun for at least a couple of hours a day, but otherwise keep the plant will not flower and this is the important part of this beautiful plant. Your watering is moderate and normal humidity.

The bird of paradise plants are very sensitive to mealybugs.

The first flowers can not see until the plant has about 5 years.

The shape of its flower looks like hummingbirds pollinate flowers, but remember that it is a South African and South American plant therefore is not a plant pollinated by hummingbirds.

To date, more than 10 years after it acquired my estrilitzia, 5 of them are still alive, that bloom every year and they are great, but I still have never seen seeds to reproduce.
